Fall Centrepiece Workshop

View More: http://amberleighphotography.pass.us/floralistaI have attended many floral design workshops over the years, and I have always wanted to start teaching them myself!  The workshops I have participated in have been amazing!  I have flown all the way to New York just to take a class, and have even driven 6 hours in a heat wave just to make it to the peak bloom season at a iris garden where my all time favourite florists were teaching at.  It seems crazy- l know.  But the truth is, the inspiration you gain, the people you meet, and the places you see, from investing in creative workshops in general are just so worth it.  It is an incredible experience let me tell you.

So people began to ask me if I ever put on workshops.  I hadn’t thought about teaching one myself until this point.  The thought of standing in front of a group of people has always intimidated me.  But the more I thought about it, the more fun it seemed!  I just had so many ideas! I started out teaching a few small workshops in my studio last Christmas. The space was small but that didn’t stop the creativity!  It was so rewarding watching the students create such gorgeous work.  Everyone was so proud of what they made!View More: http://amberleighphotography.pass.us/floralista

As the new year came I wanted to teach more!  But I have always been a bit of a perfectionist when it came to event planning…and also a bit of a procrastinator.  Spring came and went, summer was just SO busy with weddings…FINALLY I got my act together or FALL.  It was time to execute the perfect workshop.View More: http://amberleighphotography.pass.us/floralista

Location was always my excuse.  I needed a bigger space, my studio was just too small.  Not only that, but I wanted to start with a blank canvas.  I just felt like my work space was too distracting and I was stress, and I mean STRESS, about cleaning and organizing every last little object.  It had to be clutter free and welcoming! (I told you I was a bit of a crazy perfectionist).  And you wouldn’t believe it….the perfect location was sitting right under my nose!  Just around the corner from my shop is the Fort Langley National Historic Site.  (I think the last time I was there was on a field trip in grade three).  But after a quick tour of the grounds, I found the perfect space.  They call it ‘The Theatre’ and it was just oozing with atmosphere and history.  The room was big and lofty and had as cozy rustic warmth to it.

It. was. PERFECT!View More: http://amberleighphotography.pass.us/floralista

The rest of the details just fell into place.  The workshop filled up super quick once word got out on Instagram! We ordered some yummy petites from The Little White House.  I got my dear friend Renae from Threads Sew Fine to design custom florist aprons for each one of the students!  She is just the best!  Give this girl anything… she will make it beautiful.  Im not kidding.View More: http://amberleighphotography.pass.us/floralista

The flower selection was definitely one for the books.  I had planned the whole thing around the infamous cafe au lait dahlia!  It is the QUEEN of all dahlias.  Not only is it the hardest to get, but it just happens to be the only truly blushy peachy pinky creamy dahlia out there and pinterest is just full of them!  So thankfully I had lots planted at the flower farm but it wasn’t enough to satisfy this crowd!  They were thirsty for them! Okay…thats a little dramatic. But seriously, they are a tricky one to get especially when you need at least 50 of them on a peak wedding weekend.  But where there is a will-there is a way.  I sourced out some of the most beautiful cafe au laits I had ever seen!View More: http://amberleighphotography.pass.us/floralista

Besides the cafe au lair’s we had a gorgeous selection of vibrant dahlias in bright oranges, beautiful golds, corally peach, and salmon pink.  We also had a variety of beautiful garden roses such as ‘White O’hara’ and my new favourite ‘Combo’ which is the most beautiful gold rose you will ever see.  There was a spender of local snap dragons, celosia, ranunculus, spray roses, lysimachia, veronica, solidago, scented geranium, ornamental grasses and a wack load of foraged greens.  The speckled yellow crab apples were the first to go!View More: http://amberleighphotography.pass.us/floralista

It didn’t take long for the room to turn into a blur of bodies and flowers flying! My amazing assistant Carly and I went around and assisted each of the students as they needed.  Everyone’s arrangements were so unique and beautiful! We had ladies from all skill levels.  For most of the students, this was their first time playing with flowers!  For other, some just wanted to experiment with their current design style and give unstructured garden style arranging a try!
